“Allemannsretten” – the right to roam – allow us to move freely on foot and on skis, rest and camp, ride or cycle on paths and roads, swim, paddle, row and use sailboats, pick berries, mushrooms and flowers, and freely fish for saltwater fish.

You are allowed to camp in uncultivated land, as long as you do not disturb the peace of residents.
The law also comes with some restrictions: Tents and hammocks must be set up at least 150 meters away from inhabited houses and cabins, and they may remain in place for a maximum of two nights. To stay longer, you must obtain the landowner’s permission.
You must not walk across cultivated land in summer, not disturb wildlife and birdlife, not damage plant life.
The law does not apply everywhere. There are restrictions in protected areas, as well as rules concerning fishing in rivers and lakes and the use of motorized vehicles in nature.
Lighting fires is part of the right to roam, but from April 15 to September 15 it is generally prohibited.
