Rain is Pouring in Ljubljana. Instead of walking the city we drive south to Postojna Cave.
The place is clearly built to handle large numbers of visitors. Tickets, queues, guides, trains. everything organized and running smoothly.
But it is worth it.

We take a seat in a small train that disappears into the cave.
The temperature drops quickly. Cool air, damp rock. The train moves deeper through large underground halls before the walking part of the tour begins.
Inside the cave the scale is hard to grasp. Stalactites and stalagmites everywhere. Columns, curtains and formations that have taken thousands of years to grow.

Somewhere in this underground world lives a small creature as well.
The olm. a pale, almost transparent amphibian that spends its entire life in the dark water of the cave system. Blind, slow moving, and perfectly adapted to life underground.
Postojna Cave is the largest and most well-known, but Only one of thousands of caves hidden within the limestone karst landscape. It is also one of the most accessible. While others offer Different experiences. Like caving with helmets and headlamps, underground kayaking or scientific exploration.
